3 Cambodian military generals arrested for alleged criminal acts

Kyodo) _ Three Cambodian military generals were arrested on suspicion of involvement in criminal acts including robbery, the head of the military police said Wednesday.

Sao Sokha identified the three suspects as Maj. Gen. Uk Sakhorn, a deputy commander at the Bodyguards Department, Maj. Gen. Kheang Savorn, a deputy director of the Intervention Department, and Brig. Gen. Men Saran, deputy commander of Military Region 2 covering four central and eastern provinces.

They were arrested late Tuesday in Phnom Penh, Sao Sokha said. He alleged they committed crimes in the northwest province of Battambang, but he did not elaborate further.

Shortly after the arrests, rumors spread that the suspects had tried to topple Prime Minister Hun Sen. Sao Sokha denied the rumors.

Hun Sen has warned several times that he would use all possible means, including military force, to block any attempts to topple him by means other than an election.

Men Saran is a member of the opposition Sam Rainsy Party, while Uk Sakhorn and Kheang Savorn are supporters of the FUNCINPEC party, the minor partner in the coalition government headed by Hun Sen's Cambodian People's Party. ADVERTISEMENT

Expressing surprise over the arrest of Uk Sakhorn and Kheang Savorn, FUNCINPEC spokesman Nov Sovathero said the party is examining whether the generals may have been wrongly accused.

Sarith'quote:
We know quite well, if any Cambodian officer join Sam Rainsy Party or support Sam Rainsy Party, he or she will get arrest right away.
