WASHINGTON -- On the same day the U.S. Department of Justice announced it is suing 14 rental properties in Lowell for discrimination against Asian-Americans, a state commission held its first ever "Town Hall meeting'' in Lowell to discuss issues -- in particular police harassment -- involving the city's Asian population.
The Civil Rights Division of the DOJ has filed its first lawsuit alleging discrimination against Asian-Americans based up on its fair-housing tests. The federal probe is part of "Operation Home Sweet Home,'' a nationwide initiative to expose and eliminate housing discrimination.
The complaint alleges that Pine Properties Inc. and six affiliated entities -- Pine Tree Rentals Inc.; Morris Gardens Apartments Inc.; 25 & 23 Morse Street LLC; 391 Walker St. LLC; Courage Realty Trust; and 179 Pine St. Realty Trust -- violated the Fair Housing Act by discriminating based on national origin against Cambodian-Americans seeking to rent apartments in Lowell.
